";s:4:"text";s:6628:"
Their diet consisted mainly of fish, although they probably also feasted off other marine animals such as crustaceans. Just looking at Great Auk pictures, then you might get the impression that this bird was some kind of penguin. It also had webbed feet that made it a very good swimmer. Islands which are approximately halfway between Iceland and Norway. Only one egg was laid at a time. Great Auks stayed partners with their mate for life.

However, while Native Americans did hunt these birds, they didn’t do it on a scale large enough to drive it to extinction. It had a heavy curved beak that was about 4.3 inches (11 centimeters) long. These birds would breed on the rocky islands of the North Atlantic. The Great Auk had webbed feet which helped it swim. The Great Auk's food source was the plentiful fish in the North Atlantic.

During the winter these patches disappeared and were replaced by a white band between its eyes. You can read more about it, The Marine Reptiles of The Late Cretaceous, Lived in Western Europe, North America, Scandinavia and Greenland, Ate fish and other marine animals such as crabs, Was referenced in James Joyce’s classic novel Ulysses. © NewDinosaurs.com, 2019. The once huge colonies of these birds that were found on the shores of the North Atlantic were hunted into extinction for food and for its feathers (down). The word "penguin" was originally used for Great Auks and is derived from the Welsh word pen gwyn which means "white head". Native Americans valued these animals as a food source and for clothing. Its numbers were originally reduced by the Little Ice Age and then fishermen began hunting them for their meat and feathers. It is believed that the young Great Auks feasted off of plankton and off of fish that was regurgitated by their parents.

Other members of this family include murres, and puffins. After all, it is often pictured with common penguin attributes which included a black back and white front, the ability of waddle on two feet and for living along shorelines.

Great Auks were about 33 inches tall and weighed around 10 pounds by the time they reached adulthood.

Quick Great Auk Facts: - Lived up until the mid-19th century - Lived in Western Europe, North America, Scandinavia and Greenland - Was about the height of Verne Troyer - Weighed as much as a cat - Ate fish and other marine animals such as crabs - Was referenced in James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses There were discussions of cloning this bird from a diverse pool DNA collected from museums around the world. This website uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience possible. They were unsuccessful in stopping the slaughter. In 1775 in an attempt to save these birds from extinction Newfoundland petitioned Britain to stop killing the Great Auks.

It belonged to the family Alcidae (order Charadriiformes) and bred in colonies on rocky islands off North Atlantic coasts. Adult auks would reach a height of 75 – 85 cm. This animal's habitat was the freezing cold waters of the North Atlantic. DNA sequences analysis has confirmed that the Razorbill is the closest relative species of Great auk. The Great Auk – also known as Pinguinus impennis – is an extinct bird which lived up until the 19th century and lived along the shores of the North Atlantic in locations which included North America, Scandinavia, Western Europe and Greenland.

This animal was basically black all over except for its white belly. The nearest living relatives are the razor-billed auks. It also ate crabs. Although not a penguin this bird is often referred to as the "penguin of the north". It is, in fact, more closely related to a bird called a razorbill than to a penguin. After their population was reduced to a dangerously low level by hunting Great Auks became in high demand by collectors including museums. Utterly defenseless, great auks were killed by rapacious hunters for food and bait. These animals were very social and lived in large colonies. This bird was between 30 and 33 inches (75 to 85 centimeters) tall. The great auk (Pinguinus impennis) is a species of flightless alcid that became extinct in the mid-19th century. Like penguins the great Auk was a graceful and fast swimmer but on land it was clumsy and slow.

After that sighting, the animal was presumed to have gone extinct.
